Auke van Slooten is a programmer and the founder of Muze. His ideas about computing took shape in the European hacker culture of the 1990s, around student networks, shared computers and hacker camps. You learned how things worked by taking them apart, trying things and talking to people who knew something you didn’t. Then you shared what you’d figured out. Building your own was a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

He has been building software for the Web ever since, much of it with friends from that community. The tools have changed, but he still expects to be able to look inside, change things and connect them to something else. He has also spent enough time building systems that made this difficult to have some experience of getting it wrong. Programming for Wizards draws on both.
